Troy Hunt speaks at Entelect’s global DevDay

Entelect hosted its second online internal technology conference for the year – DevDay. We decided to keep it online in order for us to keep our people safe, and because we have been successfully working remotely over the last seven months.

With our new tradition established in 2020, we kept our international guest speaker a surprise. We announced Troy Hunt upfront as he kicked off the event, and no surprise here, but the crowd was blown away. Troy is well-known in the world of tech and security and needed little introduction.

Troy, who founded the “Have I Been Pwned” website, is a Microsoft Regional Director and MVP who travels the world speaking at events and training technology professionals.

Troy spoke about cyber security, focusing on password security, vulnerabilities in code when developing, and data breaches. He truly personalised his talk to the audience by using examples of South African data breaches. Not only was his talk extremely insightful, but his knowledge on all things security was appreciated.

Troy chatted about Entelect’s culture on his weekly podcast, and mentioned how he would love for his son to work at a company like ours after reading The Lore of Entelect.

What our people had this to say about Troy and his presentation:

  • ‘I enjoyed how his approach was full of humour, kept me glued to my screen for the full duration!’
  • ‘It was just awesome to gain insight into data security from the master.’
  • ‘I found the talk to be very interesting, especially since it related to events in our country. Troy raised some good points around security in applications that we develop’
  • ‘I enjoyed his extensive knowledge in his field as well as the easy and pragmatic way he made it real and applicable to us. His enthusiasm was well received, and his accent was quirky.’
  • ‘Dude! It’s TROY HUNT!’

All Entelect offices across South Africa, New Zealand and The Netherlands joined in on the day, and we had Twitter competitions and spot prize giveaways throughout.

DevDay is an in-house technology conference organised, presented and attended by Entelect’s own people where the technologist, inventor, hobbyist, engineer, or artist in you can come to the fore. The event is part showcase, part science show, part geek club, part makers club; offering a range of lightning talks on cutting-edge technologies, as well as a variety of interactive exhibition stands where people can discover the latest creative innovations in technology.
The first event took place 6 years ago, and as the company has continued to grow, so has our conference. DevDay is now hosted twice a year in both our Western Cape and Gauteng offices, with over 750 people in attendance. Our next steps would be to replicate this conference in our European and New Zealand offices once it is responsible to do so – and we hope to see this in play in 2021.
